Hello

This is my dear friend Cheryl.  We met when she came to stay at Más Allá care home as she was struggling with Pancreatic cancer.  She became a dear friend during her stay and subsequently.

My Story

Cheryl represents so many of us.  She was working, going about life, thriving.  She got her diagnosis while caring for her partner and then had to aim attention to herself.  As is typical with this diagnosis, she did not have long to live.  During her journey she found her way to us; the majority of facilities she contacted turned her away since she was considering Medical Aid In Dying.  She had lived her life as an independent strong woman and leader.  She asked herself many times why she couldn't also choose how she wanted to die.

She discussed the date she had chosen (due to her progression of unbearable pain and ability to be coherent while on strong pain medications), planned end of life adventures, identified friends and family she wanted around her and the beautiful space she want to embrace her last moments.  This cancer had taken most of her control away but choosing to decide how and when she wanted to pass, was control she was not giving up.

When the day came it was bright, clear beautiful.  She wanted to include us with her last moments since she knew how much we cared for her and that we supported her desire to experience beauty on her last day.  She shared hugs, listened to her favorite music and said goodbyes nestled in a special cozy blanket and then passed on to the next stage.  It could not have been more peaceful and surprisingly Beautiful.
